Indianapolis City-County Councilor Zach Adamson married his husband, Christian Mosburg, in Washington DC last weekend and they will have a fantastic anecdote to share on anniversaries. After all, nothing makes a better story than eloping at your own wedding.
The two can't be legally wed in Indiana, but they wanted former City-County Councilor (and Bilerico alumni) Karen Celestino-Horseman to perform the ceremony. Karen, however, isn't licensed by the District to perform a civil wedding. I am registered with the city so we cooked up a plan to help the gents have the wedding they wanted.
As the guests and family members started trickling into Meridian Hill Park, everyone gathered at the top of the cascade fountain. Shortly before the ceremony started, the three of us walked with Karen and Jerame to a little nook off to the side. Two "Do you take"s and one "By the authority invested in me by the District of Columbia..." later, I'd officially hitched the boys before the ceremony began with no one the wiser.
After we returned to the main area, Karen led a beautiful ceremony that had passersby stopping to watch and cheer when it was time for the grooms to kiss. The wedding was as simple and beautiful as Zach and Christian's love for each other and they had an immediate story to share when they explained why they had both a "celebrant" and an "officiant" on their wedding announcement.
Photos of the couple's first kiss as husbands, the elopement, and the grooms holding their marriage certificate are after the break along with video of the ceremony and Zach's speech about marriage equality.
