russia_duma.jpgLast month, we reported here at Bilerico on a bill proposed in the Russian State Duma (parliament) by lawmaker Aleksey Zhuravlev that would deny gay and lesbian parents custody of their own children.

The bill would make "the fact of a nontraditional sexual orientation" a basis for the revocation of parental rights. Other reasons already on the list include drug use, alcoholism, and abuse.

In an explanatory note submitted with his bill, Zhuravlev prominently cited the disgraced, right-wing-funded anti-LGBT "research" of Mark Regnerus of the University of Texas, whose widely-discredited New Family Structures Study falsely claims to show that children of gay parents do worse than children raised by straight parents.

Zhuravlev also appears to have been inspired by Russia's infamous ban on so-called "gay propaganda," saying that such "propaganda" should be banned not only in public "but also in the family."

Gay Star News reported this week that Zhuravlev's bill has now been placed on the calendar for debate... in February, the same month that Russia hosts the controversial 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Brilliant timing on the Russians' part. The whole world will be watching.
