obamacare-signature.jpgI just got another email from a progressive mailing list talking about Obamacare. Please stop calling it Obamacare! It's called the Affordable Care Act.

People who support affordable insurance for all, need to stop calling this health care act by the politicized term that conservative groups named it. Professor George Lakeoff wrote in his groundbreaking political book Don't Think of an Elephant that every time progressives use the frame or terminology of the conservatives, we lose. If I tell you "Don't think of an elephant," what do you think of? Right, an elephant!

If I use the term "partial-birth" abortion, instead of a "late term" abortion, what do you think of? Perhaps a baby being partially born and then killed which is what the right wants you to think to justify their stance against a woman's right to choose. Obamacare makes you focus on Obama, rather than the thousands of Americans who are unable to afford health insurance - which is what the Affordable Care Act would change.

Conservatives are trying to defund and destroy the Affordable Care Act. We absolutely must stop using their frame! If we continue to use their framing we increase the likelihood that they will take away affordable health care. I urge you to begin talking with people about the attacks on the Affordable Care Act, not on Obamacare. Yes, it's three words instead of one, but progressives need to use two more words to support our cause.

When they say "one man, one woman" and we all know what they're talking about. We have to use more words to talk about marriage equality, equal love, and constitutional rights. However, if we want to make sure that all Americans have access to health care, then we must not let them reduce health care bills to one person like Hillarycare, Obamacare, whatever. This is Americacare! We care about America and we care about Americans having the ability to have affordable access to health care.
