yourefired.jpgThis summer, as the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions considered whether to recommend the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to the full Senate, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops sent members a letter advocating that they kill the bill.

It was essentially an extended privilege tantrum, demanding a special right to discriminate against LGBT people in the name of religion even for non-religiously affiliated employers, alleging that ENDA was a backdoor attempt to further the cause of marriage equality, and casting aspersions on the concept of gender identity by placing the term in scare quotes.

So yeah, ugly stuff.

Well, they're at it again. Yesterday, as the nation focused its attention on ENDA ahead of a critical cloture vote in the Senate, the USCCB released a letter it sent to Senators last month about ENDA and a backgrounder outlining the reasons for their opposition.

Both are embedded after the jump, if you can stand to read them. Basically, according to the bishops, sexually active LGBT people are undeserving of legal protections and discriminating against them in the workplace is not wrong. Furthermore, they believe that ENDA "legally [affirms] and [protects]" sexual contact outside of marriage, wrongly places sexual orientation discrimination on the same level as race-based discrimination and above religious discrimination, and forbids the Catholic Church's "legitimate, moral disapproval of same-sex conduct."

Yet again, the Catholic Church proves that its anti-LGBT crusade extends far beyond the obstruction of equal marriage rights. Catholic leaders won't be satisfied unless all of American society accepts and defers to their particular brand of religion-based bigotry.
