I Don't Even Know What This Is

I don't know what this is, but it's intriguing. The best way I can think to describe "Very Large Green Triangles," a track by the electronic music duo Matmos, is an adult's dream version of one of those Sesame Street segments where kids play with random shapes popping out of thin air... if the dreamer is Salvador Dali. Or perhaps a 21st-century version of Disney's "Pink Elephants On Parade."

For a better description, let's turn to Thrill Jockey:

"Very Large Green Triangles (Edit)" begins with a tiny sung riff which the test subject Ed Schrader seemed to hear in his mind during his psychic session. This riff is paired with a classic Baltimore club beat and orchestral and choral stabs faintly reminiscent of Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack music for "The Omen". The result is a kind of urban gothic anthem to a primordial geometric image generated during a psychic experiment... Ed was asked to re-sing words and phrases from his psychic transcript, and these vocal snippets are chopped and stacked over a frantic vogue-ball kick drum pattern.

So grab your favorite mind-altering substance and give "Very Large Green Triangles" a listen. What do you think? Leave a comment and let us know.
