When Michael and I visited Venice, Milan, Florence, Rome as part of our European backpacking trip in 2009, we noticed a particular calendar in souvenir kiosks and shops all around those cities. It was called the Calendario Romano, and it featured a gorgeous-looking man on the cover dressed in black and wearing a clerical collar.
Of course, I picked one up. According to photographer Piero Pazzi, the dashing-looking men depicted inside are all real priests from Rome and Spain. He says that the purpose of the calendar is to make people better informed about the Vatican -- and indeed, each calendar contains a list of all 266 popes and miscellaneous facts about the Vatican -- but let's be honest, nobody buys the calendar for that information. They're buying it to look at Father What-a-Waste every month of the year!
Well, that's why we bought it anyway.
I found our 2010 calendar the other day as I was digging through our old travel souvenirs. Just for fun I thought I'd check to see if the Calendario Romano was still being issued, and sure enough, it's going strong!
