indiana-hrj3.jpgThe proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage and civil unions in Indiana has been introduced in the state legislature. The sponsors are Republican Speaker Pro Tempore Eric Turner, Republican Representatives Timothy Wesco, Wes Culver, and Rhonda Rhoads. For the first time in state history, a Democrat did not co-sponsor the bill.

Indiana names bills in the order they are presented to the legislature. While the amendment was previously known as HRJ-6, the new name is HJR-3. It is scheduled for a 10am hearing in the House Judiciary Committee.

While Republicans have repeatedly claimed that the amendment is not a priority for them this session, it will be one of the first bills heard during the new session that started this week.

Freedom Indiana campaign manager Meghan Robertson quickly announced that amendment opponents would pack the Statehouse during the committee hearing and will hold a vigil that evening.

"Make no mistake -- we're under attack, and this proves it. Lawmakers have only been in session for less than 72 hours, and already our opponents are rushing this harmful amendment through as fast as they can," she said. "As we've seen this week, our opponents are determined to shove this bill forward. And they'll stop at nothing in their quest to amend our constitution to deny critical protections to gay and lesbian Hoosiers."
