CNN recently sent journalist Randi Kaye to Colorado to report on the legalization of marijuana there as part of its "Gone to Pot" series. But after a day spent shuttling between pot dispensaries in the back of a smoke-filled limousine, Kaye didn't just get the scoop -- she likely got high as well.
In a segment on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, Kaye starts off with a taped report, speaking with so-called "ganjaprejeurs" who take marijuana aficionados on the equivalent of a pub crawl, driving from one dispensary to another, shopping (and sampling!) all along the way. We learn about all sorts of interesting-sounding pot varieties with different tastes and potencies, and discover some of the fancy paraphernalia the stores are selling (ever heard of a "doob tube?" Not me!).
By the end of the segment, as the group sets out on a quest to find tacos (yup), Kaye can be seen smiling and giggling right along with her subjects.
She's still grinning from ear to ear when the segment moves into the interview portion where she discusses her day with Anderson Cooper. Cooper begins by asking Kaye just how extensive her research was for the story, and she chuckles through her entire reply:
"You know, Anderson, it was top-notch. We did very extensive research, I have to tell you. My brain was a little fuzzy by the time I got out of there."
Cooper, not about to get in the way, responds, "Really?" Kaye continues:
"I just... I wasn't thinking right, I couldn't remember even some of the questions that I wanted to ask in the interview, which has never happened to me when I'm reporting in the field. And I found things to be really funny -- much funnier than I normally do. So I think we got a little bit of a contact high there."
Well, no shit!
The final two minutes of the interview, however, will leave you skeptical that it was just a contact buzz. And you wouldn't be the only one: the looks on Anderson Cooper's face as Kaye holds up some of the different kinds of weed smoked by the group and explains some pot-culture jargon are absolutely priceless. For her part, Kaye is smiley, giggly, and incessantly chatty the whole time -- in short, she's stoned.
The best part? Without question, the 6:45 mark, where Cooper asks Kaye how much longer she's going to be out in the field ("Are you moving there?") and she responds, giggling, "I think I need to come home."
It's pure perfection. Watch, after the jump.
