The Heritage Foundation, a religious right "think tank," and the libertarian Cato Institute, founded by one of the Koch brothers, were following the American Nazi Party on Twitter until yesterday. After users started spreading the word on the social media site, both groups unfollowed the hate group account.

Both groups apologized via tweet. The Cato Institute blamed it on automation (which is horrible social media etiquette), saying "This is why auto-follow bots are a BADDDDDD idea..." The Heritage Foundation, gave no explanation why they were following a hate group. They replied to one user with, "Thanks for letting us know. We un-followed as soon as we saw!"

The Heritage Foundation, led by former far right Senator Jim DeMint, is best known for pushing anti-gay legislation like the recently announced "State Marriage Defense Act of 2014." Representatives for the organization regularly testify in front of state legislatures as opponents of LGBT civil rights or immigration reform. They may not be an official "hate group" themselves, but they also thrive off of denigrating minority groups and encouraging discrimination both in the public and private sphere under the guise of religious liberty.
