A Kansas Democrat wants to give parents, teachers, and childcare providers greater power to give harsher spankings to children. Her proposed bill, which she says is intended to restore parental rights, would allow spankings hard enough that they leave marks.
The AP reports:
Current Kansas law allows spanking that doesn't leave marks. State Rep. Gail Finney, a Democrat from Wichita, says she wants to allow up to 10 strikes of the hand and that could leave redness and bruising. The bill also would allow parents to give permission to others to spank their children.
It would continue to ban hitting a child with fists, in the head or body, or with a belt or switch.
Proponents of the bill say that all these Goddamn Kids These Days are "losing respect for authority" and parents need to be given greater power to discipline unruly children. And get off my lawn, you hoodlums!
Corrections and Juvenile Justice Committee Chair John Rubin isn't sure whether he'll even bring up Finney's bill for consideration, but Finney says that won't deter her -- she'll just reintroduce the bill in the next legislative session.
