A long-awaited Harvey Milk commemorative U.S. postage stamp will be released on May 22nd, 2014 -- Harvey Milk Day -- the philatelist website Linns.com reports.

The postage stamp features the iconic monochromatic image of Harvey Milk by Danny Nicoletta, as well as the pride flag colors in six differently-colored squares in the upper left-hand corner. It will be the first U.S. postage stamp to feature an openly LGBT elected official.

The U.S. Postal Service is rumored to be considering Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, as cities for the first-day launch of the stamp. It is expected to roll out nationwide.

Milk, a Navy veteran, businessman and community activist, was elected to the San Francisco board of supervisors in 1977. He and San Francisco mayor George Moscone were shot and killed on November 27, 1978.
