westboro-run-out-of-moore-OK.jpgMembers of the Westboro Baptist Church descended on Moore, Oklahoma yesterday to protest in front of Central Junior High School. Central has been housing students from Plaza Towers Elementary School ever since that school was leveled by last year's deadly tornado.

Westboro, of course, blames that tornado on America's tolerance of homosexuality, so they decided to bring their "God Hates Fags" protests back to Moore to illustrate the point.

But Moore was waiting for them: hundreds and hundreds of citizens were on hand, lining the side of the street opposite the Westboro protest, waving signs and chanting. Several counter-protesters attempted to cross the street to the Westboro side, but police officers stopped them before things spiraled into violence.

The church had a permit for a 30-minute picket but left shortly after the near-confrontation. Their protest lasted just eight minutes.

Watch Westboro get run out of town, after the jump.

To her credit, after Westboro fled, one of the leaders of the counter-protest picked up her megaphone and scolded those who threatened violence. "There will be no fighting," she shouted. "If you came here to fight, you need to leave."
