The Ukrainian boy band Kazaky is back with another strange but steamy music video, "Magic Pie."
The coterie of cuties made a huge splash in 2010 with "In the Middle." The video was a sensation, and it featured all the ingredients that would come to be associated with Kazaky, like athletic dancing, sharply synchronized movements, and gender-defying motifs. They had found a recipe for success: take four sexy men with a dash of high kicks, stir in five-and-a-half-inch stilettos, and -- success.
In "Magic Pie," they're cooking up something a little different, and not just a weird cake hat (watch the video and you'll know what I'm talking about). This particular confection differs from "In the Middle" and their other hit "Love." Everyone likes to see their favorite bands expand their horizons, so props to Kazaky for trying something new.
Unfortunately, they may have thrown the baby out with the bathwater.
Rather than merely being inspired by other great pop icons, the dancers quote them (crotch grabs are so 1982). A new dancer has joined the fray, this time a young blonde woman, which diffuses some of the homoerotic tension. Even the choreography, which is as athletic as ever, lacks some of the crisp ensemble routines and balletic legwork that made "In the Middle" and others so thrilling.
Most importantly, perhaps, is the missing sense of narrative that Kazaky was able to bring to their other videos. Great music videos create drama without dialogue, stories without plot, and characters without names. "Magic Pie" lacks any of the stylish, aesthetic coherence that gave a story-like contour to their earlier work.
But don't let me spoil your appetite. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so check out the video and judge for yourself. Besides, sexy people dancing sexily: Who doesn't want a piece of that?
