stephen-colbert-trans-medicare.jpgKing of late-night comedy Stephen Colbert once again put the LGBT community in his crosshairs last night. This time, Colbert's satirical on-air persona raised "concerns" about recent groundbreaking changes to Medicare involving transgender health care.

Last week, a review board at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services concluded that there is no medical or scientific justification justification for a 30-year-old rule that automatically excluded medically necessary transition-related surgeries from Medicare coverage. This means that for the first time, trans patients and their doctors will be able to submit documentation to Medicare and apply for coverage of gender reassignment surgery on a case-by-case basis.

Of course, this has Colbert very upset:

"But even more disturbing than the idea of Nana and Peepaw playing Mr. Potato Head downtown is that it violates the tacit agreement we have reached with the transgender community. I agree to be totally cool with it -- which I clearly am, which TIME magazine clearly is, and which all the people lobbying for this transgendered woman [Carmen Carrera] to be a Victoria's Secret clearly are -- as long as you are hot.

"But now you want me to accept unattractive transgender people? Where does it end? Will I have to accept unattractive non-transgender people? What am I made of, humanity?"

Watch, after the break.
