southern-baptist-convention.jpgYesterday, delegates to the Southern Baptist Convention officially and overwhelmingly adopted a resolution condemning transgender people.

The statement was predictably couched in superficially compassionate-sounding (read: face-saving) language; it condemned anti-trans bullying and refers to trans people as "image-bearers of almighty God." But platitudes can't mask the document's blatant transphobia. For example:

RESOLVED, That we condemn efforts to alter one's bodily identity (e.g., cross-sex hormone therapy, gender reassignment surgery) to bring it into line with one's perceived gender identity; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we continue to oppose steadfastly all efforts by any court or state legislature to validate transgender identity as morally praiseworthy (Isa. 5:20)...

The resolution also maliciously opposes all legislative and judicial efforts treat gender identity as a protected class, slams the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and decries the cultural mainstreaming of transgender identities and experiences in schools and the media.

Shame on the SBC for once again rejecting inclusion and love and embracing discrimination and bigotry instead.
