Bush's Base on Katrina

From a reader responding to a poll question of who is responsible for what went wrong in New Orleans in today's Fax Daily, a local fax newsletter:
"God is cleansing the chosen nation of sin. Remember Sodom and Gomorrah? And now President Bush can name two Christian judges to return us to one Chrisian nation under God. See the signs people!"

I've seen the signs and it's clear: this country is in real trouble if "the base" is not returned to its former fringe status. Moderate Republicans, are you paying attention?

Which just goes to show you that Pat Robertson is not the only loud mouthed idiot. We have plenty of them here in Indiana as well! It seems to me that if I remember my Bible correctly, the sin of Sodom and Gommorah was being inhospitable to strangers. This seems to correlate with the Bush administration's failure to help the poor mostly African-American citizens of New Orleans escape the drowned city... Maybe God is punishing us for reelecting Bush as our president? Maybe God is punishing the United States for Fred Phelps? Maybe God is punishing us for shaving our beards? Maybe God is punishing us for following all of Leviticus properly? Or maybe, just maybe, this is a natural disaster which doesn't need a spiritual reason for happening. Maybe, just maybe, the reason for a hurricane of this magnitude has something to do with that thing called global warming... Nah, Bush and the fundie's wrathful God is so much more fun to blame it on!

Actually, Pat Robertson said -- either yesterday or the day before (sorry, life has started to blur) -- that Katrina was a "cleansing" -- then he stopped, looked deeper into the camera and said with special dramatic emphasis, as if everyone in his audience would know exactly what he meant, "a true cleansing."A chill ran up my spine.I called to ask what he meant and everyone on their phones I spoke with was in denial about him saying it at all, which really drove home the sense that it was something I should be concerned about. I asked for a written explanation. We'll see if they send one.
