Just found out that INTRAA's newly-elected president is weighing in on the HRC fundraiser at the Rathskeller...

TO:        Mr. Joe Solmonese, Human Rights Campaign
FROM:   Indiana Transgender Rights Advocacy Alliance (INTRAA)
DATE:    October 30, 2005
SUBJ:    Proposed fundraiser in Indianapolis

Dear Mr. Solmonese:

The Indiana Transgender Rights Advocacy Alliance (INTRAA) is concerned about an announcement that HRC is hosting a fundraiser for you in Indianapolis at the Rathskeller restaurant on Sunday, November 6th.
The Rathskellar has recently come under fire for hosting a fundraiser for Brian Bosma, the Speaker of the Indiana House, who is a primary instigator of anti-GLBT rhetoric and legislation in Indiana.  Already the target of protests, the Rathskeller is now understood to be planning a fundraiser for Indiana Senator Pat Miller, head of a national movement against gays and lesbians in the United Methodist Church, and who recently gained national notoriety for her “Unauthorized Reproduction” proposal, a controversial measure to prohibit gays, lesbians and single people from using medical procedures to become pregnant.

, shouldn't an organization like HRC make a point of selecting and supporting a GLBT-friendly establishment in every city it visits?  Particularly in light of the aforementioned issues, the Rathskellar is clearly a poor choice.  There are dozens of GLBT-owned and GLBT-supportive restaurants in Indianapolis that are far more appropriate to the function envisioned by HRC.

While we would like to be supportive of HRC and its event in Indianapolis, should HRC proceed with this function where it is presently planned, you risk not only poor attendance, but you will be sending an objectionable message to your supporters in Indiana.  INTRAA cannot in good faith support having the event at the Rathskeller.  We earnestly encourage you to reconsider your choice of a venue.

Sincerely yours,

Leigh Anne Richards, President
Indiana Transgender Rights Advocacy Alliance (INTRAA)
