Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Cindy Hutchinson, along with Bilerico-Florida contributors Dr. David Fawcett and Michael Emanuel Rajner, accepted a proclamation at the City of Fort Lauderdale Commission meeting this past Tuesday declaring this weekend (November 7 -9) "Gay Men's Health Weekend."

GMHS.pngMayor Jim Naugle even signed the proclamation, which was a sharp contrast to his previous statements and actions towards the gay community which lead to massive protests and outcry last summer. Michael Rajner had this to say to the Sun-Sentinel about the experience:

To be honest, it was an evening to stand proud as a gay man living with AIDS. I often give thanks for the borrowed time I am here on this earth. Tonight I was very moved when Commissioner Hutchinson read the proclamation and I looked at the audience to observe their reactions. What moved me the most was the motion of acknowledgement made by the African American minister who sat in the front row. It served as a signal that there are true men preaching God's words and understand that we are all truly God's children and deserving of the same dignity and respect.

See a copy of the proclamation here.

The mission of the SRGMHS is to improve the health and well being of gay men living in the southeastern United States. This is accomplished through the organization and delivery of quality education and information programs through vehicles designed to promote better physical, spiritual, and mental health.

Thank you to Commissioner Hutchinson for once again stepping up for the LGBT community!
