--Amelia Earhart, who took off from Newfoundland on this date in 1932 on the world's first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean by a female pilot.

(Bonus fun facts: Out lesbian actor Jane Lynch played Earhart for Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, but her scenes were cut. Actor Hilary Swank of Boys Don't Cry is scheduled to play her in an upcoming film.)
