While I was in San Francisco for the Victory Fund's Gay & Lesbian Leadership Conference, I had a chance to speak with Representative Tammy Baldwin after her plenary panel discussion. We talked about the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and other upcoming LGBT legislation.

One of the best parts of this video is how thoroughly she explains the entire process and political strategy behind ENDA. If you've had questions about what's happening with the legislation, Rep Baldwin makes clear the jumble of "mark-ups," committee hearings, attaching bills to other legislation, and the politics behind each step in the process.

Rep Baldwin was gracious enough to talk with me at length. I'll have another video up about her thoughts on the LGBT movement soon.

Interesting to hear what all is going on behind the scenes with ENDA. It makes me a little less pessimistic about next session. I'm still not feeling good about it, but this makes me feel better.

And, as a resident of Madison, I just have to say: Yay Tammy! I hope that we'll have you representing us for a long, long time!

Just like Polis, she just gave you "HRC" speak.

The most unusual (or disingenuous) comment she made was "I'm not privy to the vote count in the Senate." Really? Many of us know within 2 votes what the situation is in the US Senate. I would think she would have at least as much information - especially with her access. We have 55 votes - at best.

This position - it's possible and we're working on it - is all HRC/Democratic spin to raise money.

If we cannot beat the opposition in the US Senate, why the charade? Why the "false hope?" It should become obvious if you listen closely - it is about fund-raising. Telling the truth won't raise money.

Hopefully, our community doesn't fall for it.

Great interview. Good to know more about what's up.

But I kinda wished she described those legal issues being meted out in the House a bit more than she did. What are the hold-ups? Why is it that unnamed, off-the-record people are saying they want X or Y changed and we're not in on the process? Will they carve out holes in the ENDA and just weaken it further?

Can you post a transcript please? Some of us are deaf or reading from work where we can't watch videos. Thanks.
