The Los Angeles Stonewall Democratic Club has announced the Stoney Award winners and I'm humbled to join fellow honorees Congressman Jared Polis and longtime activist Cleve Jones as one of this year's honorees. John Cleary, the club's President, writes:
The Bob Craig Media Award is given to an openly gay individual who has through the power of media been an advocate for the shared goals of Stonewall Democratic Club.
Bob Craig was the founder and publisher of Frontiers Magazine, established in 1982 and continuing to publish today. Frontiers is the magazine of record for the Los Angeles LGBT community and played an influential role in West Hollywood's successful effort to gain cityhood in 1984. Bob Craig was also noted for his philosophy that it was his part to report the news, not to be the news.
Previous awardees have included Adelante Magazine, Tracy Sypert, Bill Rosendahl, and Karen Ocamb, spanning print and broadcast journalism. This year's honoree, Bil Browning, represents the first time the Bob Craig Media Award has been given for achievement in online/new media.
While the award is being given to me, in truth it's meant for the entire site and the community we've built here together. I can only accept it on behalf of the Bilerico family. After all, without the contributors and Projectors, this place would be an empty echo chamber. I asked them to also put the name of the site on the award and announcements instead of just mine to honor that fact.
So buck up and smile big, folks. You just won an award.
The ceremony will be held Sunday, March 28 in Universal City. More details about the awards and the winners after the jump.

Dear Bil, Editorial Staff, and Contributors,
Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on a richly deserved award & recognition of the contributions made by the assembled crew of citizen journalists in advancing the causes of achieving full equality and erasing hate. Your site continues to be at the cutting edge of proficient, professional, and quality journalism & commentary for the greater LGBT community.
This group should be proud of its collective accomplishments and the irreplaceable valuable jewel that The Project is quite frankly in the crown of the LGBT community.
Brilliant & well done folks!
Warmest Regards,
Brody Levesque
Congratulations, Bil and all the folks at Bilerico.
While I was living in L.A. I got to meet Bob Craig a few times. He was warm and friendly, and could make every conversation interesting. I remember particularly talking with Bob during a cruise in Newport Harbor one evening --- Bob pointed out to me the house once owned by John Wayne, and told me how ironic it is that the main airport in Orange County is now named after the famous movie actor --- in actuality, John Wayne hated that airport!
I take it that Bob is no longer with us, and he will be missed.
Congrats to you, Bil :)
Congratulations, Bil and everyone. Well deserved!
A.J. - Yes, Bob died 10 years ago and is buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Sadly, for reasons far too complicated to go into here, he still has no headstone. And yes, I miss him still.
He had a heart as big as all outdoors and was a mentor to many.
Interesting irony: Bob was a Republican. He felt he could have more influence with them by maintaining his registration though he almost always voted Democratic.
Congrats, guys!
