Deck chairs on the Titanic

Pardon me for being a little bit maudlin today, but three CNN titanic-deck-chair.jpgBreaking News! alerts have come in to tell me that:

  • John Boehner is the new Speaker of the House
  • Nancy Pelosi is the new minority leader
  • Senator Lisa Murkowski will declare victory in Alaska this evening

Is it just me or does it feel like they've just re-arranged the deck chairs on the Titanic? Same players. Same game. Different positions.

And we continue to sail merrily on our way to a giant iceberg.

Politics remains a false hope and a huge waste of time.

Curious what you see as representing the iceberg?

You went and did it, Bil. You dragged out Andrew.

He's like that character in Peanuts, who has a storm cloud over his head all the time.

Here's another view of what happened today:

Nancy Pelosi was elected Democratic leader because she is the ONLY person in the leadership group, with whom we ought to be thoroughly pleased. She was handed an ambitious legislative agenda by the new Obama White House, and she accomplished every damned thing they asked. Period.

She out-led Harry Reid by a country mile. In heels.

As it turns out, at great political cost. All because we let the nay-sayers control the agenda those first 8-10 months. In the spirit of cooperating, or not being obnoxious. In the vacuum, the no-Gang's message found a home.

And Speaker Pelosi, an outstanding role model for our daughters, kept plugging away, passing Cap and Trade, Health Care, DADT, a huge Banking Reform Bill, a huge Stimulus package, and auto bailouts. Among other things.

Cut her some slack. Nearly a hundred mil, was spent to demonize her. Her abilities have been proven.

Who were House Dems going to choose? Stenny Hoyer? Jim Clyburn? Puh-lease.

You're out in DC now. Stick your nose out i PG County and ask some old-timers about Stenny's tenure as County Executive before he went to Congress. And Mr. Clyburn is nice, but gutless.

Nancy is a tough broad. We could, and have done, a lot worse.

Pray for the other side of CapHill. That's where we saw the re-election of leadership mediocrity.

The character in Peanuts was PigPen who was surrounded by a dirt devil. You are referring to Joe Btfsplk from Al Capp's Lil Abner comic strip. He was the world's worst jinx with a constant thunder cloud over his head.

The blue dogs got turned out in large numbers, and for the most part the Liberals stayed. This should tell the party leadership something about the mindset of rank and file Democrats.

Go Nancy!

While I do not mind the Hymn "Nearer My God To Thee" which reportedly is the last song played on the Titanic. I would hope that we can get an updated selection of music for the current incarnation of Congress. Sadly I suspect with the incoming Congress the music will be pretty much the same old songs too.

Ladies and gentlemen it is time to wake up to reality. Civil rights have never and never will advance for any group of people during a recession or depression. The economic mess this country is mired in must be addressed first. 15 million people are out of work and can't feed their families. Most are white heterosexual men and women who could give a sh*t about your rights about now. DADT repeal may or may not squeak through but that is really a minor issue affecting a few thousand people. Kiss the rest of the GLBT want list goodbye until Joe and Jane six pack have jobs.

in complete agreement

We aiming much higher Bil, we are rearranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg!
All the pundits are proclaiming the Ruganicans just took control of the government and yet, unless I am mistaken, the Damnocrats still control both the Senate and the Executive branches which is 2/3 of the government. With this sort of "reporting" one cannot but help but wonder what the hell happened to reality?

Of course the Damnocrats have already proven themselves the perfect victims of the Repugican bullying so I guess maybe the Repugs did win after all.
