National Motor Vehicle Admin Group: Change Trans IDs

The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) is weighing in on the issues surrounding identification of transgender motorists. The Association is recommending that transgender drivers be allowed to more easily change the gender markers on their driver's licenses.

According to Thomas Manuel, AAMVA's program director of driver fitness, they suggest that transgender drivers be given IDs with their preferred gender marker, so long as a licensed medical provider signs off on it.

"This is a customer service issue as far as we're concerned," said Manuel. "The driver's license has become the de facto form of ID... whatever your gender identity is, that should be on the license."

According to Manuel, updating transgender policies can save DMVs both time and money. Enforcing strict and complicated policies often takes extra resources. Still, he said, it is not certain how many states will adopt the AAMVA recommendations, which Manuel also wrote about in the organization's magazine, MOVE.

In time, Manuel said, AAMVA will likely convene experts on transgender issues to draft an official "best practice" recommendation. For now, the organization is simply making DMVs aware of the issue.

Georgia won't change. I fought them many times in the past. The "Good Ol' Boys" network that runs the DMVS would rather spit tabackie on us then change our licenses. Even when a person follows all the proper rules, they get harassed. That's why we have the Buddy System in place for trans people.

I'm not looking for North Carolina to do it for good anytime soon either. Luckily I haven't had much issue with it as I rarely have to show any id and even then they generally don't notice the wrong gender on it or they figure its an error. Still, it'd be nice if it were corrected.

Florida has so south will

I had given up on Florida but after seeing your post I checked it out. You are so right! I will pick up another letter from my doctor Tuesday. By Wenesday I should have not only a correct passport but a correct DL too. Thanks for the info!!!
