Mazel tov to William Hasty III and Gregory S. Smith. The happily married couple were wed in New York recently and submitted a wedding announcement to their hometown newspaper gay-wedding-announcement.jpg- The State in South Carolina.

The New York law allows out of state couples to marry, so readers could see more wedding announcements for gay couples in the local paper.
The paper's policy is to run wedding announcements from local gay couples who get married in states where their marriage is recognized.

Back in 2006, The State ran an editorial supporting the state's constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Now they're publishing our wedding announcements. Oh, how times are changing.

Yes, I saw this on Twitter. Supposedly the southern folks in SC are heading toward the newspaper office with pitchforks waving in the air and torches a-blazin' -- but the gay married couple live in upstate NY and plan to stay there. Smart.

But we must congratulate the newspaper for having both the courage and the motivation to move up into the 21st Century.
