I asked Twitter what question I should ask for today's open thread and several folks responded back with some variation of this one: Is now openly gay former 2004 Bush campaign manager Ken Mehlman's apology for his role in using LGBT rights as a wedge issue sincere?

Since coming out Mehlman has joined the fray on our side of the marriage equality battle and was instrumental in passing pro-marriage bills in New York and New Jersey. Are you satisfied with his repentance? Do you accept his apology?

Personally, I do. People change and people do stupid things when they're scared. I can't imagine being in his shoes (mostly because I'd never let myself be put in that position) so I don't know what I'd have done. He did some despicable shit, but he's put his money where his mouth is and has turned into a huge Republican ally. We need folks from both sides of the aisle if we're going to win this fight. Why turn down help where we can get it? Grudges won't win us equality, but forgiveness and understanding will always triumph.
