american flagUsually I stick to showtunes but since it is almost the 4th of July, I think a National Anthem sing-off is appropriate.

When I first started this sing-off series, it was inspired by the times me and my friends - usually drunkenly - gather around the computer and search YouTube for the multiple versions of whatever song has popped up for debate. The most common song that we still go back to and force new friends to weigh in on is the "Star Spangled Banner."

I almost wrote this post before, and I know the exact day because it was when Whitney Houston died. I'm still kicking myself that I didn't - because all of my friends agree that her Super Bowl performance is unbeatable - though Jennifer Hudson comes very very close.

This song has been sung by so many people (some good, most bad) that it is incredibly difficult to narrow it down - therefore I am sticking to the Super Bowl performances. I am sure there are tons of people I am over looking, so use the comments to share some links and let's make this sing-off together.

Feel free to steal this game. It is going to be scorching temperatures for large parts of the country, so this is a great excuse to go inside and cool off on Independence Day - because what could be more patriotic than a gaggle of gays setting around a computer, or iPhone, or iPad, or whatever, bitching about which diva was most flawless in her performance (sorry guys)?

Check out my favorites after the jump. Can anyone outdo Whitney? Let me know.
