Ariel.jpgSorry, Charlie, but your mermaid friends are imaginary. Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) updated their "Ocean Facts" newsfeed to declare "No Evidence of Aquatic Humanoids Has Ever Been Found." It's their response to the deluge of TWO letters they've received after Animal Planet's "Monster Week" lineup irresponsibly included the two-hour, televised special, "Mermaids: The Body Found." Now if only dinglehoppers weren't such a mystery, wrapped in an enigma? Here's what else you need to know:

  • Equality-minded college students at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) are aghast a lesbian student allegedly staged her own anti-gay harassment. Four months ago, several hundred of Lexi Pennell's classmates publicly rallied to her defense. Now, the 19-year-old finds herself barred from the Connecticut state university system for five years, and facing eight felony charges for fabricating evidence, among others.
  • Talking cats? Hold onto your pointy hat, because cartoonist Kori M. Handwerker's webcomic, Prince of Cats, casts quite the spell. Whimsical watercolors trace the growing attraction between two, teenage best friends - Frank and Lee - as competing forces, both supernatural and actual, threaten the boys' bond. Meow!
  • Barely a month before the London Games liftoff, midfielder - and Tilda Swinton fan - Megan Rapinoe of Team USA opens up to Out magazine about playing soccer as an openly-gay Olympian.
  • Eighteen-year-old Mary Kristene Chapa has regained consciousness, a close friend confirmed for ABC News, nearly two weeks after Chapa and her girlfriend, Mollie Olgin, 19, were both shot in the head by an assailant at Violet Andrews Park in Portland, Texas; claiming Olgin's life.
  • Same-sex marriage cake-toppers created for Facebook accounts allow newlyweds to truly have their cake, and tweet it too!
