We have a lot of different groups within the LGBTQ community. But one subculture is growing stronger by the minute... the LGBTQ geeks. We are becoming a powerful force in this culture and our turnout at Comic Con and sci-fi conventions are getting a lot of attention.BentCon2012_476-320x177.jpg

In fact, it has inspired its own version of Comic-Con called, Bent-Con.

Now what is Bent-Con? It is the fastest growing convention supporting LGBTQ geek culture. It is also a celebration of the LGBTQ contributions to the science fiction, fantasy and horror genres seen in comics, movies, games, literature and technology.

Sean Z is the co-creator of Bent-Con. He wanted to create an active and supportive space for LGBTQ creative community. Along with a few other artists, writers and creators, Bent-Con was put together and introduced in 2010 in Silver Lake. The event only had about 500 participants, but it was enough to excite the fans for more.

So in 2011, Bent-Con returned bigger and better. Over 2000 people attended Bent-Con, creating an overall enthusiasm and appeal from the community. And now, as this event heads into its third year, the bar has been raised. Bent-Con will bring an array of talent and geekdom to the stage.

Bent-Con's line-up includes authors Christopher Rice (The Heavens Rise) and David Gerrold (When Harlie Was One), actress Claudia Christian (Babylon 5), writer and creator Jane Espenson (Husbands), artist Phil Jimenez (Wonder Woman), the multi-talented Amber Benson (Buffy) and the legendary Wendy Pini (Elf Quest, Masque of the Red Death.)

Bent-Con will also host an assortment of panel topics focusing on gay superheroes, Wonder Woman and her gay fans, screenwriting, anti-bullying and sexuality in comics. And there are plenty of opportunities to meet some the top LGBTQ artists such as Justin Hall, Jon Macy, Joe Phillips, Jezza Smiles, Patrick Fillion, Dave Davenport, Jeff Krell, Brian Anderson and Sean Platter.

There are few and far between events that showcase the amazing elements in the LGBTQ sci-fi/fantasy/horror world. Through this convention, many fans and allies are exposed to the outstanding creative talents within our community.
