One of my favorite songs is Dolly Parton's tune, "Jolene." But I'm also a big fan of all the various covers of the song - dolly-parton-jolene.jpgespecially Paula Cole and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes' versions. I have all three on my iPod.

While Dolly's original is a little fast while still retaining the emotional plea to Jolene to "please don't take my man," Paula Cole turns it into a lament for an almost-gone relationship. The Gimmes change it into a punk rock angry screed for an adulteress.

I thought I'd throw in some of the other covers that are popular (The White Stripes and Alison Krause) plus one I didn't expect - Olivia Newton John. I also made sure to find live versions of all the songs so we're not deciding on spot-on perfect recordings; this is raw singing talent.

So now it's up to you, Projectors. Who's cover of Jolene is the best? Obviously, Dolly is the Jolene Queen so she's not an option. Got another favorite? Leave a link in the comments section.

They're all after the break.
