Shannon MinterHas it already been four years since the annual Transgender Law Institute at Lavender Law began? Each year we've had about 75 attorneys in attendance, and while the discussions held during the sessions are useful, the networking is probably the most important element of the Institute. When I started working as a professor in 2004, I could count on one hand the number of trans attorneys I had heard of, let alone knew personally. It's so good to know that I have colleagues around the country who are working on and have the same interests as I. I hope to see you in San Francisco!

This year's theme is "25 Years of Transgender Law," which fits with this year being the momentous 25th anniversary of the Lavender Law Conference. This year's Institute will focus on employment, immigration, health care, and increasing trans participation in the legal profession. Lavender Law will take place this year on August 22-24 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in San Francisco, and the Institute is held on the 22nd. I encourage you to apply for the Institute here: http://www.lgbtbar.org/annual/program/transgender-law-institute/

Our keynote speaker is the amazing Shannon Price Minter, Legal Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, whose smiling face you can see above. NCLR is one of the nation's leading advocacy organizations for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Mr. Minter, a transgender attorney, is known for his tireless work advocating and litigating to advance LGBT rights since the 1990s. His work is marked by representing LGBT clients in high impact cases across the country in state and federal courts, assisting with the passage of antidiscrimination laws, and winning court cases involving LGBT families and youth, employment, and health care. Mr. Minter was one of the lead attorneys involved in the recent California marriage equality lawsuits over Proposition 8. In addition to his work as an advocate and litigator, Mr. Minter is the editor of an anthology called "Transgender Rights," published in 2006. He is a 1993 graduate of Cornell Law School.
