putin.jpgThe Kremlin announced yesterday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law a draconian measure banning so-called "gay propaganda."

The law, which was passed unanimously by the State Duma and approved by the Senate last week, is modeled on a similar piece of legislation passed last year in the city of St. Petersburg. It outlaws any kind of public expression of LGBT identity, LGBT pride, or support for the LGBT community, and it makes it a criminal offense to say that gay relationships are equal to non-gay ones.

According to the Washington Blade, individual violators of the law face fines of between 4,000-5,000 rubles ($124-$155), government officials would be charged between 40,000 and 50,000 rubles ($1,241-$1,551), and organizations would be fined up to 1 million rubles ($31,000) or be shut down for 90 days. Foreigners face jail time and deportation.

Last week, as Putin prepared to sign the "gay propaganda" law, he denied that the measure is homophobic, despite the fact that it essentially legitimizes anti-gay bigotry nationwide and provides cover for anti-gay hate crimes. Putin also bizarrely claimed that the rights of LGBT people in Russia are not violated under the 'gay propaganda' law, saying that he had to think about the children.

With this vicious, barbaric law, Russia continues to de-evolve back to the days of Stalinist dictatorship.
