This past August in Miami-Dade County, the Christian Family Coalition mobilized a fear-based campaign of hate-mongering and was successful in killing a measure aimed at protecting one of our most vulnerable communities of people - our transgender brothers and sisters.

Instead of praying for an end to discrimination and marginalization of a vulnerable population, they instead preyed on a community of people who have been victims of heinous and monstrous crimes.

Over the last several years I have learned a great deal about the struggle that many transgender individuals encounter in every aspect of life.

This Sunday, September 22nd at 2pm, faith-based leaders and community advocates will gather to pray for those who prey upon us. The rally will be at the northwest corner of Bayfront Park (301 Biscayne Blvd) in Miami.

Bishop S.F. Makalani-MaHee of The Pride Center at Equality Park in Wilton Manors, sat down with me this week to share his perspective on the Christian Family Coalition's campaign of hate and the Pope's recent comments about LGBT people.

Bishop also shared his thoughts on statements from a Florida state representative that legislation to protect LGBT people is immoral - but that he "loves" LGBT people. Bishop's response was measured and poised, but when the representative made the comment to me and a colleague, I didn't hold back as well as Bishop did.

Bishop will be among the featured speakers at Sunday's rally.
