jerry-springer-show.jpgWell, this was unexpected...

In an interview with TMZ, Jerry Springer promised that he will no longer use the slur "tr**ny" on the Jerry Springer Show.

Springer told TMZ that until a recent episode called "Trannies Twerk It Out" sparked widespread backlash, he had no idea that the term is offensive to trans people.

"I've just been educated," he said. "I won't use that term. I honestly had no idea that you're not supposed to use that term, so now we'll find another term to use."

The Advocate reports that just in the past year, multiple episodes of Springer's show have included the t-word in the title, including "Mom Don't Ruin My Tranny Wedding," "Tranny Take Downs," "You Got Me a Tranny Stripper!?" "Online Tranny Trap," "My Girlfriend is Leaving Me for a Tranny," and "Tranny Bomb!" The Jerry Springer Show is in its 23rd season.

Good on Springer for committing to stop legitimizing this ugly slur. Let's hope he keeps his promise.

A clip of Springer's interview with TMZ is after the jump.
