martin-ssempa-thanksgiving-parade.jpgToday in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, thousands of people held a rally celebrating and giving thanks for the country's draconian new "jail the gays" law. This act of defiance comes as Western governments have cut or redirected tens of millions of dollars in aid away from Uganda's government in response to the measure's passage.

President Yoweri Museveni, who signed the anti-homosexuality law last month, led the festivities. Pastor Martin "Eat Da Poo-Poo" Ssempa served as chief organizer of the event, which he called "Uganda Pride" in an obvious swipe at the concept of gay pride.

Global Post reports:

"Thank you for saving the future of Uganda," read signs held by the demonstrators, who marched through the streets of the capital Kampala... Other demonstrators, who sang a song called "bye-bye homosexuality", appealed directly to US President Barack Obama.

"Obama, we want trade, not homosexuality," one sign read.

Critics have said Museveni signed the law to win domestic support ahead of presidential elections scheduled for 2016, which will be his 30th year in power.

But Museveni made clear his personal objection both to homosexuality -- which he claimed had "unhealthy repercussions" -- as well as to oral sex. "Oral sex! The mouth is for eating, it's not for that purpose," he told the crowd.

An AP report notes that Museveni said gays deserve punishment because homosexuality is "criminal and it is so cruel." And in a show of defiance against Western aid cuts, he added:

"Thanks for the support, but let us produce wealth so that we don't have to beg... The Europeans are threatening us with aid because we are lazy, that is a weakness."

Museveni's remarks echo those he made earlier this year, when he inexplicably tied homosexuality to economic weakness, alleged that people become gay or lesbian for "mercenary reasons," and said that creating jobs for unemployed youth would make them less likely to be tempted by Teh Gay.

A screen grab of the "Uganda Pride" logo, which Ssempa tauntingly tweeted out to pro-LGBT organizations like the U.S.-based Right Wing Watch, is after the jump.
