laverne-cox-cc14.JPGActress Laverne Cox, history-maker and transgender trailblazer, racked up another superlative today when she was nominated for a primetime Emmy award. Cox is the first openly transgender person to receive a primetime Emmy nomination -- in the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category, for her role as Sophia Burset on the smash-hit Netflix series Orange Is the New Black.

Cox, who is arguably the highest-profile transgender person in the United States and a "possibility model" for thousands of people both inside and outside the trans community, is no stranger to making history: in 2010, she was the first African-American trans woman to produce and star in her own TV show, Vh1's TRANSform Me. And this year, Laverne became the first openly transgender person to appear on the cover of TIME magazine.

As for Orange Is the New Black, the show earned a total of 12 nominations -- the most for any comedy -- including Outstanding Comedy Series and individual nods for lead actress Taylor Schilling (Piper Chapman), supporting actress Kate Mulgrew (Red), and guest actresses Natasha Lyonne (Nicky Nichols) and Uzo Aduba (Suzanne/"Crazy Eyes"). OITNB was also nominated in writing, art direction, casting, cinematography, editing, composition, and sound mixing categories. A full list of Emmy nominees is after the jump.

The winners will be announced during the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast, which will air on NBC on August 25 at 8 p.m. Eastern.

We'll be watching and rooting for Laverne Cox (and Orange Is the New Black too)! But whatever happens, she's already a winner in my book.
